The plan form geometry of the wing is correlated with the flight strategy to allow multiple structural configurations and a high degree of flexibility. The combination of quadrangular and polygonal patterns with more than four sides allows for a greater degree of manipulation in the wings structural configurations. The algorithm shown herein reproduces the pattern found in the wing of a dragonfly in a structural truss; it computes pentagons and quadrangular cells around the perimeter of the selected surface. The veins are formed by plates whose height varies across the surface depending on where higher external loads are. The direction of extrusion, i.e. the effective structural depth can also be varied across.
