Design Modelling Symposium Berlin 2011 - Workshop III

A top-down approach for designing panelisations and patterns on architectural freeform surfaces.

Traditional CAD tools limit the designers to using a bottom-up approach for paneling freeform surfaces by building up panel upon panel with certain restrictive rules to reach an approximation of the original design intent. Such an approach has limited applicability for complex geometries, which have gained increasing interest in contemporary architecture. New computational tools are needed to accommodate new design trends and to enable true construction-aware freeform design. In this workshop we will present a top-down approach for paneling freeform surfaces, where the designer has true creative freedom for modeling organic shapes and is still able to break down these forms into aesthetical, buildable, and cost-effective components.
