Parametric Design + Optimization + Digital Fabrication

A Dialogue Between Era

The intent of this installation is to inspire a dialouge about our built environment relative to material and context. The form of the structure is a rationalization of complex conceptual space alteration, as well as the abstraction of elements found in early Savannah architecture. The manila rope is an interpretation of the horizontal lap board found in many early Savannah structures. The dialogue is about uniformity found in building materials which inherently bound designers to rigid parameters. Three 4’x8’ sheets of 3/4” plywood and 500’ of manila rope were intertwined to create this robust structure. The form was developed and rationalized in grasshopper, processed and CNC routed through MasterCAM and installed at a public venue in Savannah, Georgia. The use of digital fabrication as a medium allowed me to explore and develop individuality in typical materials.
