You'll use 5th or 6th gear for highway cruising at speeds of 60 mph to 70 mph and are ideal gears for best fuel economy. You'll usually change up from 4th gear into 5th or 6th gear at a speed of around 40 mph or so. Answer (1 of 10): No. You'll never forget. But it might be rough while you get back up to speed. One of the most popular drive-train mods done to early Mustangs is to swap out the non-over driven three- and four-speed transmissions with the later-model overdrive T-5 five-speed. Not only does the T5 provide a highway-friendly overdrive, but it also provides a deep First gear ratio for better off-the-line performance. Step 5: Let the RPMs drop slowly. When the engine speed matches the transmission speed in the gear you want, the shifter will slip into place. Use the throttle to either keep your speed or let off the accelerator to decelerate for another downshift. Once you come to a stop, you can no longer use this technique. Push the ignition button or turn the key to start the truck. With the stick shift in neutral and both pedals still depressed, start your truck. For a traditional ignition, simply turn the key clockwise in the ignition. Newer trucks may require you to press a button instead. [8] Push the stick shift into first gear. This is where your sixth gear comes in handy. It's essentially an overdrive that allows the car to operate at lower RPMs and save fuel. Those are the two biggest differences between 5 and 6 speed manual transmissions. With your left foot, press the clutch pedal in all the way. Turn the ignition key clockwise all the way to "start" and hold for about one second until the the engine turns over. Release the key. If the shift knob is still in neutral you may release the clutch pedal at this time. What is a 5-speed manual transmission? The manual transmission is synchronized in all forward gears for smooth operation. It has a lockout so you cannot shift directly from Fifth to Reverse. When shifting up or down, make sure you push the clutch pedal down all the way, shift to the next gear, and let the pedal up gradually.
