D&D occasionally uses "eldritch" as a simple synonym for "arcane". The Eldritch Knight originates in D&D 3rd edition. The earliest appearance is the D&D 3.5 Dungeon Master's Guide (2003), where it was used as a kind of generic patch prestige class to make fighter/wizard or fighter/sorcerer multiclassing feasible. Earlier examples, like the Spellsword originally from Tome and Blood (2001), cost Eldritch knight or arcane trickster seem particularly synergistic. Since the unusual artificer multiclassing rules say that I should round my level up, I'm thinking three levels of artificer to go with either of those classes, though the fourth for an ASI or the fifth for an extra attack are tempting, of course. I've been thinking about the 4e swordmage class lately, and particularly how it both is and isn't translated into the 5e Eldritch Knight fighter, Bladesinger wizard, and other weapon-and-arcane-casting classes (Valor bards, Pact of the Blade 'locks, and Arcane Trickster rogues). The core point is that swordmages are defenders with a side of striker, while 5e's fighting casters don't Paladin Guides. So only those 1-4 spells can come from any Wizard school. All the other spells they choose have to come from Abjuration or Evocation. This is a bug in the system. Choose between three Martial Archetypes: the Champion, Battle Master, and Eldritch Knight. The Champion is an excellent choice for first-time D&D players. Your focus is on physical damage and resilience.
